Sewing Instructor at Queensbridge Tech Lab 2019-20

The Queensbridge Tech Lab specializes in 2D & 3D design, multimedia production and emerging technology programs for the residents of New York City. We are looking for a volunteer who is passionate about contemporary fashion and streetwear and would like to facilitate a Fashion Forward Sewing Program at the QB Tech Lab. The Sewing Instructor Volunteer will be responsible for the following:

  • Maintaining four in-house sewing machines and hand sewing tools.
  • Preparing innovative, hands-on sewing projects for the public ages 10 + (these can range from machine sewing, hand sewing, clothing repair, embroidery, knitting, tailoring, patches etc.)
  • Lead Introductory Sewing Workshops for the public once a month.
  • Facilitate a bi-weekly Open Sewing Hours or Sewing Circles for the public.
  • Assisting with other Tech Lab duties as needed
Skills required:
  • Must:
    • Have an interest in street wear and contemporary fashion.
    • Enjoy working with youth and encouraging their ideas.
    • Have an interest in learning / incorporating sewable circuits into sewing programming.
    • Have an interest in learning / incorporating digital fabrication based technologies (Vinyl Cutter, 3D Printer etc.) into sewing programming.
    • Be patient and helpful.
    • Be responsible.
    • Be creative and adaptable!
  • Is comfortable using:
    • Sewing machines & hand sewing tools
    • A computer
    • Camera
    • Design software and fabrication technologies
  • Is excited to develop:
    • People and teaching skills
    • Workshop and program design kills
    • Design software skills (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
    • Fabrication skills (Sewing, 3D Printing, Electronics, Vinyl Cutter)
SCHEDULE
The project will start in January.

Flexible days, bi-weekly 
3 hours a day between the hours of 1:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Commitments:
  • Volunteer Trainings (as needed): Mondays and Thursdays in January
  • Leading Introductory Sewing Workshops for the public once a month.
  • Facilitating bi-weekly Open Sewing Hours or Sewing Circles for the public.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Criminal Background Check - Individuals, 18 and older are subject to an investigative background check that may be used when considering volunteers.
