Bureaucracy Busters: AI, Paperwork, and the Challenge of Preserving SNAP and Medicaid

An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 New Yorkers no longer receive benefits stemming from changes to the federal guidelines affecting the Supplemental Nutrition Access Program ("SNAP"); and a projected 900,000 people are at risk of losing their health insurance coverage as a result of the changes to Medicaid eligibility beginning in January 2027.

This presentation, facilitated by Beneficial Computing will explore why accessing public benefits is so complicated, from means testing and the burden of proof to H.R. 1's expanded SNAP + Medicaid work requirements and the challenges of documenting work, particularly for gig workers and people with irregular schedules.

Topics will include: the role of AI, including the risks of relying on models drawing from outdated or unreliable sources rather than actual policy, and demonstrate online tools such as SNAPhelp.nyc and other resources to assist with helping people obtain support.
