WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN NYC

You are eligible to vote in New York City General Elections if you are:
- a U.S. citizen
- a New York City resident for at least 30 days
- at least 18 years old (you can pre-register to vote at 16 or 17, but you must be 18 to vote)
- registered with the NYC Board of Elections by the designated deadline

Registered voters in New York City possess the opportunity to cast ballots in general elections held on the first Tuesday of November.
General Elections are held:
During Even Number Years the focus is primarily on state and federal offices.
Federal: U.S. President, U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives; State: New York State Governor, State Comptroller, Attorney General, State Senate, and State Assembly.
During Odd-Numbered Years, the focus is primarily on municipal (local New York City) offices.
Citywide: NYC Mayor, Comptroller, and Public Advocate; Borough & Neighborhood: Borough Presidents and City Council Members.

Polling Sites
Polling sites are designated public locations where eligible voters can cast their ballots in a secure, accessible, and orderly environment, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
Early Voting and Election Day polling site may be different from each other. Voters should confirm the address and times of all polling sites. Also, you will need to know your Election District / Assembly District number which is required to know when voting.

Voter ID
Registered voters do not need to show ID to vote, unless they did not provide identification with their registration.
First time voters must provide identification either on or with their voter registration application. If you have not provided ID by Election Day, you are still allowed to vote by affidavit ballot, but not using the poll site scanner.
Acceptable ID includes entering one of the following on your Voter Registration Application:
- Driver's license number
- Non-driver's ID number
- Last four digits of your social security number
If you do not provide your driver's license number or the last four digits of your social security number on your registration form, you can include a copy of any of the following documentation with your registration application:
- Current and Valid Photo ID
- Current Utility Bill
- Bank Statement
- Government Check or Paycheck
- Government Document that shows Name and Address

PRIMARY ELECTIONS
Primary elections in New York City are nominating elections where political parties choose the candidates who will represent them on the ballot in the November general election. Instead of choosing who wins an office, primaries decide who gets to run for that office under a specific party banner.
You must be registered with a political party to vote in a primary election. The winner of a primary election runs as that party’s nominee in the general election held in November.

SPECIAL ELECTIONS
Special elections are held when an elected official leaves office before the end of their term. Special elections dates are determined by the Mayor, within three days of a vacancy. They are usually held on the first Tuesday at least 80 days after the office has been vacated. Any registered voter who lives within a district holding a special election is eligible to vote.

How to Register to Vote

If you have a New York State ID
You can register to vote online with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need a valid New York State driver license, permit, or non-driver ID, along with the last four digits of your social security number to begin.
If you do not have a New York State ID
You can complete a voter registration form and mail it to the Board of Elections. You can also visit your Borough Board of Elections office to register in person.
Update Your Voter Information
You can update your voter registration by submitting a new voter registration form to the Board of Elections. Reasons to update your registration:
- You changed your name
- You moved within NYC
- You want to update your party affiliation
