Queens Public Library awards the Go the Extra Mile (G.E.M.) Award to those who go above and beyond in their service and embody the Library’s mission “to transform lives by cultivating personal and intellectual growth and by building strong communities.”
Civic Engagement & Leadership
Community leadership is unique and unlike other positions. Individuals motivate and inspire others to action. They are insiders who can articulate the beliefs, hopes, and needs of their community.
A community partnership or “coalition” is a group of local partners who work together to solve shared problems impacting multiple sectors.
Cultural competency or "equity, diversity and inclusion", is the understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities within and between groups.
Friends of Queens Public Library
The Friends of Queens Public Library serve to strengthen the institution as a whole through legislative advocacy, program planning, community awareness and fundraising.
Friends of QPL work to inform others of the importance of public libraries within the community -- while representing the values, interests, traditions and concerns of their neighborhoods.
The Friends of QPL receive member benefits that offer access to meetings, activities and special events showcasing the library's programs and services.
