How to Apply (18 and Older)
Adult, 18 and older may apply for volunteer opportunities year-round with Queens Public Library. Please be aware: the application process can take up to 30 days for approval, with additional delays during summer and fall recruitment.
Follow these easy steps to begin:
Individuals between 14-17 years should read the requirements for youth volunteers...here
Under "Find an Opportunity", you may search for available volunteer projects. Click on a service title to view a description containing an overview of the tasks and responsibilities, skills required, and dates/times needed.
Once you identify a suitable project, use the "Express Interest/Sign Up" button at the bottom of the description to fill out a volunteer application. Make sure to upload any required documents.
Once received, you will be contacted by Volunteer Services with the next steps to complete the registration process.
QPL will review your application and may contact you to schedule an interview with the project supervisor. The interview provides a chance to learn more about the position, discuss the requirements, schedules, and specific duties and tasks.
Applicants recommended for placement will receive an Official Offer Letter. Applicants must reply and either accept or decline a position.
Once a project is accepted, applicants 18 and over are required to complete a criminal background screening prior to start. Queens Public Library conducts the following screenings:
- Nationwide Criminal Record Locator Search
- Social Security Trace (if applicable)
- 50 State Department of Justice Registered Sex Offender Search
All volunteers recommended for final approval must complete any required trainings and attend orientation before starting their volunteer service. Orientations cover important policies and topics related to having a successful service experience. Trainings and orientation sessions are available virtually (no travel necessary).
All individuals applying for in-person volunteer assignments with the Library must submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to final placement and start of all projects. As part of the Volunteer Welcome Kit, Individuals receive information with steps to submit documentation to the Library Health and Safety unit.
