How to Apply (18 and Older)

Please be aware: the application process can take up to 30 days for approval and placement, with additional delays during the summer and fall recruitment.

Adults, 18 and older, may apply for volunteer opportunities year-round with Queens Public Library.

Follow these easy steps to begin:

  1. Search and Apply
  2. Interview
  3. Background Check
  4. Start Volunteering

Individuals between 14-17 years should read the requirements for youth volunteers...here

Step 1: Search and Apply

Under "Find an Opportunity", you may search for available volunteer projects. Click on a service title to view a description containing an overview of the tasks and responsibilities, skills required, and dates/times needed.

Once you identify a suitable project, use the "Express Interest/Sign Up" button at the bottom of the description to fill out a volunteer application. Make sure to upload any required documents.

Once received, you will be contacted by Volunteer Services with the next steps to complete the registration process.

Step 2: Interview

QPL will review your application and may contact you to schedule an interview with the project supervisor. The interview provides a chance to learn more about the position and discuss the requirements, schedules, and specific duties and tasks for the opportunity.

Applicants recommended for placement will receive an Official Offer Letter.  Applicants must reply and either accept or decline a position.

Step 3: Background Check

Once a project is accepted, applicants 18 and over are required to complete a criminal background screening prior to start. Queens Public Library conducts the following screenings:

  • Nationwide Criminal Record Locator Search
  • Social Security Trace (if applicable)
  • 50 State Department of Justice Registered Sex Offender Search

Step 4: Start Volunteering

Once finalized, applicants will receive a welcome kit, including the Official Welcome Letter and link to virtual new volunteer orientation videos. The orientation covers important policies and topics related to having a successful service experience. Once they receive the welcome kit, volunteers can contact the project supervisor to schedule their start date.
