Constitution/Citizenship Day Celebrates National Pride
September 17th marks Constitution Day and Citizenship Day in the United States. This dual federal observance commemorates the adoptions of the Constitution in 1787, while celebrating the 325 million born and naturalized citizens across the country.
Established in 1952, the days were honored separately until 2004 when the holiday was combined into a singluar, albeit longer title. Consitution Day and Citizenship Day is the start of Constitution Week, its purpose to promote the study and education of the Constitution. The week hosts a multitude of activities, including nationalization ceremonies, community debates, readings, and concerts.
Queens Public Library is celebrating Constitution Day and Citizenship Day by distributing free pocket constitutions at all branches while supplies last. Also, the League of Women Voters of the City of New York will be at the Central Library (89-11 Merrick Boulevard, Jamica, NY 11432) from 10:00am - 2:00pm and the Flushing Library (41-17 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11355) from 1:30pm - 4:30pm, handing out copies, helping register new voters, and answering questions about the upcoming primary election.
