Virtual Resume Coach 2019-2020

The Job & Business Academy (JBA) invites experienced professionals to volunteer with us on our mission to ensure that Queens residents are best prepared for the modern workforce.

Volunteer Career Coaches will specifically assist with virtual resume assistance provided via email and making referrals to other JBA services and online Queens Public Library resources.

This is a project pilot that requires applicants to submit a resume; complete both a phone/teleconference interview and criminal background check.  You will also be required to attend mandatory online training prior to start. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Review customer resumes and create, format, and provide feedback and suggestions via email sessions

  • Track number of clients assisted and record of recommendations provided

  • Refer customers to QPL staff to assist with accessing additional digital resources and job search activities


Mandatory Training will be provided to:

  • Understand the purpose of a resume and the 3 most commonly resumes used 

  • Understand what resume reviewers look for and how to present the information

  • Become familiar with using WebEx Teleconferencing, tracking customer statistics and accessing library-issued emails

Volunteer Resume Coaches:

  1. Provide recommendations via email (provided by QPL)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency required. College Degree preferred.

  • Highly proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft Office

  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service to large volumes of diverse individuals;

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in job readiness or workforce development preferred;

  • Demonstrated experience creating and providing feedback on resumes, cover letters, and employment documents;   

  • Self-motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively under pressure;

  • Intermediate to Advanced computer proficiency, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet and email;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task, particularly in a remote environment;

  • Knowledge of Queens and Queens community resources a plus.

  • Available for 2-two hour shifts (Monday through Friday; 9:00am - 11:00am; 11:00am - 1:00pm; or 1:00pm - 3:00pm)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by volunteers to successfully perform the essential functions of their tasks. Required to utilize a computer to enter and retrieve information; and to virtually communicate with JBA staff members as well as with external customers.  Use of telephone, personal computer, email, and Google Drive and/or a proprietary database will be necessary. 

This is a virtual service project. Virtual volunteers may be asked to provide confirmation that projects have been completed.  In most cases, volunteers would receive verification of project completion instead of completed service hours.

QPL virtual service opportunities maintain our commitment to quality and safety for the public.  All volunteers must meet library standards to participate in service projects.

Individuals 18 and older are subject to an investigative background check that may be used when considering volunteers.
