Climate Ready: Air Quality Illness

Air quality is negatively impacted by changes in the climate  Weather-related conditions such as extreme heatwaves and droughts, along with the burning of fossil fuels used in manufacturing contribute to the advent of:

Longer pollen seasons resulting in asthma attacks and allergies

  • Warmer temperatures coupled with pollutants resulting in industrial smog (smoke + fog), and unhealthy air particles
  • Increase in the number of wildfires and smoke in the atmosphere

The decrease in air-quality disproportianally affects vulnerable populations, including:

  • Infants and Children
  • People with Asthma and Respiratory Issues
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems
  • Older Adults

Communities are urged to address these conditions through

  • Establishing air-quality alert systems
  • Increased awareneness of air-quality conditions via media channels
