Climate Ready: Causes of Climate Change
Long-term climate change is a result of a four-part action:
- Industrialization requires the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas to produce items that drive technological, social, economic, and development progress on a global scale
- Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere
- Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat and lead to global warming
- Global warming changes weather patterns over time, and contribute to occurrences such as extreme flooding and heatwaves -- this is called climate change
The results of climate change create varying social and environmental risks around the world, including significant risks to public and personal health, and often negatively impact the most vulnerable people.
