Volunteer Opportunities
We provide year-round opportunities for teens, ages 14 and older to participate in volunteer projects. Projects are offered on an ongoing, single-day, or virtual basis and possess a series of minimum requirements to apply.
Applying for Projects
Projects are listed online and include a job description with details - Summary, Skills Needed, Minimum Requirements, to help you choose which projects to apply (View a sample description) After reviewing the listings, you may begin the application process by selecting the Express Interest / Sign-Up button. You will need an email address to register.
Types of Projects
We offer several types of projects during the season:
- Ongoing: Ongoing projects require a minimum time committment that usually consist of 2-4 hours per week. Typically, these projects are open-ended without an end date, but in some cases will conclude on a specific date.
- Single-Day: Single day projects require a limited time commitment of 3-5 hours. These projects are conducted on a specific date and time period and may include one to two shifts based on the total number of hours for the activity.
- Virtual/DIY: Virtual and Do-It-Yourself projects are offered on a limited basis. These projects are not conducted within a QPL location and may be offered at a specific branch or listed online. Time commitments vary based on the project.
Commonly Asked Questions by/for Teens
Q: What is the minimum age to become a library volunteer?
A: You must be at least 14 years old to apply for most volunteer projects. However, 13 year olds may apply for several single day projects. In some cases, a volunteer project may increase the minimum age based on the duties and skills required.
Q: What documents are needed to apply?
A: Anyone under eighteen must submit a signed parental consent when applying for a volunteer position. Minors must also submit proof of a valid Employment Certificate (aka Working Papers). The certificate is either Green (14-15 years old) or Blue (16-17 years old); and is issued through your high school.
Some projects may require additional documents such as Report Card/School Transcript, Resume, or Writing Sample. These items are listed within the job description.
Q: Do I receive credit for community service?
A: Yes. All volunteer projects are assigned community service credit. Typically, credit is based in the total number of hours performed by the volunteer.
Q: How do I receive service credit for volunteering?
A: You may request a "Service Verification Letter" upon completion of your project or at any time after starting an ongoing project.
Q: Will volunteering with the library lead to a paying job with QPL?
A: In some cases, you may be offered and hired for a part-time and full-time position based on your performance as a library volunteer. However, paid positions are not guaranteed as a result of your time as a library volunteer and most do not transition into a compensated worker.
Q: What should I do if I don't see a volunteer project listed for my neighborhood branch?
A: Some locations may not possess a need or volunteers. Others may opt to recruit privately and do not list opportunities on the website. You are encouraged to visit your local branch in-person and speak directly with the Library Manager or Assistant Manager about possible opportunities. If available, you will be given instructions to apply online and complete the onboarding process.
